When Niyah and Katie contacted me about being senior models for the Mountain View High School Class of 2013, they knew exactly what they wanted: to take their senior portraits together! These two have been best friends since they met in 9th grade, and already have plans to go to the same college as roommates. Niyah and Katie were awesome during their modeling session, and kept themselves and me laughing the whole time! We created some gorgeous portraits for these two beautiful ladies, and I am so happy to have them on board as models for the class of 2013! If you see them in the halls of Mountain View High School, make sure you tell them how great their pictures are!

It’s been a busy Spring already, but I would be remiss if I didn’t take a minute to introduce you to two of our wonderful Senior Models for the class of 2013, Maddie and Ben! These two both hail from Mountain View High School, and are just finishing up their Junior years. Maddie and Ben will be representing Aaron Spicer Photography at their school for the 2012-2013 school year, and I am so happy to have them on board! Maddie and Ben are both excellent student athletes: Maddie a soccer player, and Ben a long-distance runner. I had a great time with both of these guys during our shoots in downtown Fredericksburg. If you see them around town, or in the halls of school, let them know how awesome their pictures are!

If you’ve kept up wtih my antics over the years, you’ve no doubt heard me talk, probably obtusely, about my friend Geoff. Many moons ago, Geoff contacted me about shooting weddings. Ever since that day, Geoff has been my go to guy for all things photography related. So it’s no surprise that my wife and I have become good friends with Geoff and Jenn. But when Geoff contacted me about a portrait session for his and Jenn’s 5th anniversary, I was at the same time honored and nervous. After all, Geoff knows all my tricks, err, I mean techniques. As it turns out, all my fears were unfounded, and Geoff and Jenn and I had a great portrait session! We met in the early morning at a local farm so that we could kick off their anniversary weekend. After the session they headed out West for some winery tours and a romantic meal at the Inn at Little Washington. Happy Anniversary, guys! Here’s to many more!

Travis and Julie were married at the Hotel Monaco in Alexandria, VA last weekend, and I was so lucky to be a part of this wedding full of gorgeous details and truly genuine people! Travis and Julie knew from the get go that they wanted to do a “first look” session before their ceremony so that they could have a few intimate moments together before the madness of the day ensued, and so that they could be more relaxed through the rest of the day. We were all holding our breath the night before, hoping that the rain would stay away for our outdoor first look and ceremony, and it did! Julie got a call early that morning from a good friend, who just so happens to be a meteorologist, and we got the all clear for the day! After the ceremony, we headed into the gorgeous lobby of the Hotel Monaco to take a few more portraits, and then it was all party from that point on! I had a great time with Travis and Julie, and the rest of their families! Congratulations, Travis and Julie! I hope you’re still having a great time in Provence!

A very special thank you to Kelley Cannon of Kelley Cannon Events and to Ali Manning of the Hotel Monaco for making this wedding so gorgeous!

Many of you know that the city of Fredericksburg holds a monthly “First Friday” walk, which I’m very happy to be a part of. If you’re out touring the many fine galleries and restaurants that will be hosting new works, please make sure to stop by and see me at Kybecca. If you don’t make it out on Friday, not to worry, the work is up for two months, and we’ll have an official gallery reception at Kybecca on the first Monday of June.

Sarah and Greg were married in April at the Fredericksburg Baptist Church. Their wedding was full of emotion and sweet, personal details. What’s more, is that these two are active members of their church, and every guest at the wedding felt like family. With over 250 guests, this wedding still felt as close and intimate as some of the 20 person weddings I shoot, which is great, and really speaks to what a beautiful job Sarah and Greg did in planning their wedding. Sarah and Greg had an afternoon reception in the fellowship hall of the church, with gorgeous food and desserts. The made-to-order crepe station was a big hit! After their grand exit in a classic 1967 Cadillac convertible, I followed Sarah and Greg out of the city to the farm of their good friends, so that we could create a few more beautiful portraits together. Congratulations Sarah and Greg!

Julie and Kevin were married two weekends ago at the Belle Haven Country Club in Alexandria, Virginia, on one of the most gorgeous Spring days you could imagine! I’ve known Julie for quite some time now and was so touched to be a part of the event. Julie and I were both English teachers at Colonial Forge High School. It’s where I met my lovely wife, and it just so happens that it’s also where Julie met Kevin! I didn’t know Kevin as well as I knew Julie, but I knew that he was perfect for Julie after photographing them together at another one of our colleagues weddings! Julie and Kevin’s wedding was full of details that were every bit as thoughtful as they are. Before the ceremony Julie gave Kevin a gorgeous pocket watch and handkerchiefs to match. Kevin surprised Julie with an iPad! I’m sure from that point on that the day felt like a blur for these two, because it was packed full of loving family, heartfelt toasts and some great dancing through the night. Congratulations Julie and Kevin!

What a way to start the 2012 wedding season! Alice and Pau gathered their closest friends and family, and met in Meridian Hill Park to be married yesterday afternoon. It was a beautiful ceremony, and Pau and Alice were so grateful for everyone that was a part of their joyous celebration. After the ceremony, we took some pictures in the park, and then finished our portraits at the National Arboretum. After that, we parted ways, and the happy couple and their family were headed down to Capital Hill for dinner. Congratulations Alice and Pau! Thank you for including me in your day (and for the lovely boutonniere)! Enjoy a quick sneak peek of their photos below.

If I could choose one word to describe the way that I want a couple to react when they first see their wedding photos, it would be “surprised.” That probably sounds a bit strange, so let me explain. I’m a storyteller, both at heart and by trade. And for me, the best stories are the ones that surprise me. So, when I approach your wedding day, I’m first and foremost looking to tell a story that faithfully documents all the thought, love, blood, sweat and tears that you’ve put into planning your wedding. However, at the same time, what’s driving me and inspiring me throughout the day are all the moments and emotions that make a wedding day special and particular to you and your family. Just as people claim there are no new stories under the sun, so too do they say that if you’ve been to one wedding, you’ve been to them all. I’ve never found either of those maxims to be true, and over the course of the past five years I’ve shot more than 120 beautifully unique weddings. Sure, all weddings follow a similar plot line: You get ready, you get married, you celebrate. But in between the lines of that simple story, the emotion that I witness can be described as nothing short of magic. Because in the end, this story is about you. So, when you sit down to view your photos, I want you to see a beautifully surprising story. I want you to see moments that you didn’t know happened, emotions that you didn’t know you had, and pictures that you had no idea I was taking.

One of the ways I keep my skills sharp, is by regularly participating in the Wedding Photojournalist Association’s Quarterly contests. Being a member of the WPJA is an honor in and of itself, but I am always touched when one of my images is chosen by a panel of distinguished judges as being one of the creme of the crop. The beauty of the WPJA is that unlike other photography associations, membership is based on merit (disclaimer: there is a nominal membership fee). Each quarter, contest entries are submitted by members of the WPJA from across the globe, and the top 20 photos are chosen by a panel of industry experts. This quarter’s judges were particularly impressive, and I encourage you to check them out: JEANIE ADAMS-SMITH, ANDREA BRUCE, BILL FRAKES, YUNGHI KIM

For the 2011 WPJA Quarter 4 contest I am extremely happy to announce that two of my entries placed in the top 10 for their respective categories! My first wedding of 2012 is this weekend, and I couldn’t be more excited to get off the ground running! A heartfelt thanks goes out to all the lovely couples who have, and all those couples who will, let me tell their stories. I am nothing short of honored. Check out all of the winners at http://www.wpja.com/
